It was then that I received a camera as a gift, and from that moment I fell madly in love with creating photos — a hobby that has always fascinated me. It wasn't until 2012, when I lost my job and moved to a new city and struggled to find work. Seeing that I couldn't find a job and had no savings, with only my wife's love and support never changing, I finally decided to make photography my career, which completely changed my life. For the first two years, expenses exceeded income and life was very hard. But through constant effort, plus some good luck, my career flourished. Today, my wife, daughter, and I live an easy and comfortable life — all because 14 years ago, I received that camera. Every day I do something related to photography or the photography business. Photography is the only hobby I truly have, and it's also my job. It makes my vacations with my wife not boring, and it's how I met all my current friends. I can say my life has nothing left that's unrelated to photography. Most of the time this is a good thing, though sometimes I get tired and run dry of inspiration, but that's very rare. Before going to a place, I don't really look at other photographers' works shot there. I prefer my pre-planned shooting ideas to be vague, so that when I actually arrive, I'll explore better. I think a good companion or partner makes my trips less lonely, and also lets me learn about other photographers' shooting approaches and philosophies. However, I also very much enjoy the process of creating alone, and it's the norm. You can watch the newest land form right before your eyes, even though you risk great danger to do so. I often joke with friends that after shooting lava, there's no scene left in this world that can move me... It's a basic question, but I think many people care about it."},{"t":"p","x":"Ryan：我目前用尼康D850，以及几只尼克尔镜头，焦段覆盖了14mm到300mm，而14-24mm镜头是我最常用的一只，其他器材有 Fotodiox的ND镜和偏振镜，并且最近有一家不错的中国三脚架品牌—富图宝赞助了我，我很期待和他们的合作。我携带的器材比我所知的任何一名摄影师都要少，四分之三的情况我都不用滤镜，也只有一半的概率我会使用三脚架，我每次出行只带三支镜头。我今年36岁，但我的背部却像一位干了一辈子苦力的75岁老头那样，所以我喜欢让我的背包尽可能得轻些，哈哈。","b":false,"xe":"Ryan: I currently use a Nikon D850 with several Nikkor lenses covering focal lengths from 14mm to 300mm, and the 14-24mm lens is the one I use most. For other gear, I have Fotodiox ND filters and polarizers, and recently a good Chinese tripod brand — Fotopro — sponsored me; I'm looking forward to working with them. I carry less gear than any photographer I know. Three quarters of the time I don't use filters, and only half the time do I use a tripod. I bring only three lenses on each trip. How did you cultivate this personal style, and what was the inspiration? On the road to developing a personal style, what would you like to share?"},{"t":"p","x":"Ryan：我个人认为，一名成功的艺术家需要经历三个阶段：模仿、精通、创新。我们从事的任何形式的艺术，都是从模仿开始。举个例子，当一个人开始学习弹吉他，他不会立即写歌，而是学着如何去演奏一个他喜欢的乐队创作过的歌曲。当他到了精通的阶段，可以熟练地使用吉他，并且用自己喜欢的音乐类型去创作歌曲，这也是大多数人就此便止步不前的阶段，任何艺术形式都是如此。而真正的艺术家会打破结界走到第三个阶段，创新。这一阶段，他可以创造出这一领域此前从未有过的事物，这也正是一门艺术真正被开创的过程。我会尽全力提升自己，希望有一天，我会真正到达第三个阶段。","b":false,"xe":"Ryan: Personally, I believe a successful artist must go through three stages: imitation, mastery, and innovation. Any form of art we engage in begins with imitation. For example, when someone starts learning to play the guitar, they don't immediately write songs; they learn to play songs created by a band they like. When they reach the mastery stage, able to use the guitar skillfully and compose songs in the musical genre they love — this is also the stage where most people stop and stagnate, and it's true of every art form. But true artists break through the barrier and reach the third stage: innovation. At this stage, they can create something that has never existed in this field before — and that's exactly the process by which an art form is truly founded. What do you think of this? And how do you think one can shoot truly original photos?"},{"t":"p","x":"Ryan：数码时代使得摄影的入门变简单了，加上社交媒体的流行，这个时代的摄影师数量比历史上任何时候都要多。但我想，绝大多数摄影师都会永远停留在创作的第一个阶段：模仿，并且很难越过这一难关。所以千万不要固步自封，要努力使自己成为拥有创造力的人。","b":false,"xe":"Ryan: The digital age has made it easier to get started in photography, and with the popularity of social media, there are more photographers in this era than at any time in history. But I think the vast majority of photographers will forever remain at the first stage of creation: imitation — and it's very hard to get past this hurdle. Would you consider shooting in China?"},{"t":"p","x":"Ryan：我希望我的职业生涯足够长，这样我将有更多的机会挑战自己，持续学习，也希望终有一天会到达创作的第三个阶段。我觉得我的后期处理依然有很大的提升空间，相机能做到的事情是有限的，而在按下快门之后的后期创作空间是无穷尽的，所以未来我会更加注重我在后期制作方面的提升。来中国拍摄，是的我一定会，我结识过很多中国人，也与很多人成为了朋友和工作伙伴，我非常期盼有一天我会去到中国，亲眼见识他们所说的那些美景。","b":false,"xe":"Ryan: I hope my career is long enough that I'll have more chances to challenge myself and keep learning, and I hope to reach the third stage of creation someday. I feel my post-processing still has a lot of room to improve. The camera can only do limited things, while the creative space in post-processing after pressing the shutter is endless, so in the future I'll focus more on improving my post-production. Shoot in China? Yes, I definitely will. I've met many Chinese people and become friends and work partners with many. Even if some people do it to chase fame and fortune, that way of pursuing fame is relatively harmless. I've seen too many people who like to criticize the purposes and methods of others' artistic creation — that's saddening. I want to appeal to everyone: artistic creation should be free, and any form can be accepted, as long as it follows your own heart and serves your own goals.
