As the saying goes, "Clothes make the man, and gold makes the Buddha."
Ansel Adams once said: "The pre-shoot is composing, and post-processing is performing."
Good post-processing can make a photograph more radiant, even completely transformed. After seeing the before-and-after comparisons of the following set of landscape photos, you may gain a deeper appreciation of the importance of post-processing.
1. Original indoor photo:
After dreamy, high-end gray processing:
2. Original city night scene:
After purple-gold dreamy tone processing:
3. Original photo on a sunny day with a blank, flat sky:
After dreamy autumn color rendering:
4. Original photo of a brilliant sunset glow:
After dreamy colorful sunset-glow grading:
5. Original long-exposure photo on an overcast rainy day
After recomposition and dreamy warm-cool rendering:
6. Original backlit sunset photo
After exposure blending and local dreamy softening with luminosity masks:
7. Original photo underexposed to the left on a cloudy day
After exposure recovery and further dreamy effect rendering:
So the question is, how exactly are these photos post-processed? Is there some black magic involved?
In his course series "The Complete Dreamy Landscape Workflow: Pre- and Post-Production" (《梦幻风光前后期全流程》), Thomas will use more than 12 hours of hands-on video to fully demonstrate the pre-shoot thinking and post-processing process for the 7 photos above. Raw practice files are available for download. Do you want to take up the challenge?
