So Many Effects from the Same Image? The Winning Works of the First Photo-Editing Contest Are Out!

Thomas's first photo-editing mini-contest has finally come to an end. From the same photo, Thomas saw more than 800 different post-processing results, many of which were excellent. In the end, the following 4 photos won the final awards.

Let's first review the two original photos from the first contest:

Q: Why were two original photos provided?

A: There is a tourist directly below in the first photo, and a tourist's head in the lower-left corner of the second photo. Merging the two photos with a mask yields a photo without tourists; providing the two originals makes it easier for everyone to remove the clutter. Of course, you can also directly use the clone stamp to remove the people, or choose to keep them.

Thomas's review:

The color grading of this edited work is very unique. Unlike most works' purple dreamy style or blue-orange brilliant-dawn style, this photo uses the analogous colors of low-luminance green, cyan, and blue as its dominant tone, looking magical yet also natural.

The sunlit areas use orange-red and yellow as the dominant colors, standing out sharply against the low-luminance cool-toned palette. Most works separate the volcano from the sky mainly through brightness, but in this photo the volcano is rendered red, distinguished from the yellow of the morning sky by hue as well, making the peak stand out strongly. The three-dimensionality and texture of the foreground tree branches are also very well crafted.

One area for improvement is that the saturation of the greens in the shadows is a bit too high overall and could be lowered.

Thomas's review:

This edited work is also very creative, directly turning the light from side lighting into backlighting, which is why it's the most eye-catching among the many submissions. The whole image has rich light-and-dark contrast and high saturation, giving it strong impact.

The shortcoming of this work is that the backlight effect is not yet very natural, especially the light spilling from the foreground trees is a bit abrupt. In addition, the global softening is quite strong.

Thomas's review:

This work successfully creates a very dreamy atmosphere through color rendering and the depiction of light.

The author could be more meticulous in handling local details. For example, the white mist in this image has also been tinted purple, which looks odd. You can use the hue/saturation tool combined with a mask to appropriately reduce the saturation of the mist.

Thomas's review:

This work has excellent overall effect and detailed depiction. For example, the mist rising from the volcano is rendered orange-red, while the mist at the mountain's foot is adjusted to a light blue. By handling the warm-cool contrast of the originally same-colored mist, it effectively highlights the point of interest and separates the layers.

The foreground trees in this work are a little too dark. You could appropriately brighten the shadows locally, keeping the foreground's detail and dimensionality without being too eye-catching from being too dark or too bright.
