Watch Movies, Learn Photography? 3 Classic Masterpieces with Excellent Visual Language Recommended!
Thomas Chu Photo
As a visual art, film achieves highly polished visual presentation through industrial-grade lighting, set design, shooting, and post-production.
So for photography enthusiasts, repeatedly watching excellent films is also a subtle way to expand one's aesthetics — not to mention that quite a few popular color palettes and classic compositions come from inspiration in cinematic photography.
From the simplest analysis of composition, color, depth of field, and light, to a deeper understanding of how cinematography creates atmosphere, advances the story, and even embeds metaphors hidden in the frame — all of it can benefit us greatly.
In the future aesthetic-expansion tutorial series, Thomas will also include film recommendations. Today, let's share 3 very famous classic masterpieces!
Blade Runner 2049 (银翼杀手2049)
As the film that ignited the "cyberpunk" color trend, "Blade Runner 2049" achieves the extreme in futuristic visual presentation.
The film's compositions with strong spatial layering, emotionally charged lighting changes, and impactful color palettes are all worth savoring repeatedly.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (布达佩斯大饭店)
When it comes to films that leave the deepest visual impression, many people will blurt out "The Grand Budapest Hotel."
The almost obsessive symmetrical compositions, the layered framing full of detail tension, and the highly personal color palette — every frame of the film is admirable.
Avatar (阿凡达)
As a sci-fi blockbuster that led the 3D era more than a decade ago, "Avatar's" visuals don't feel dated even today.
Its stunning detail work, color pairings that fit the atmosphere perfectly, and textbook compositions are truly admirable.
