What Godly Color Grading! Recommending 3 Landscape Photographers with Comfortable Colors~

Color is the soul of a photo's visual expressiveness.

For similar colors, tiny differences in hue, saturation, and brightness can bring huge differences in the frame's effect.

In today's photographer recommendation, Thomas will introduce 3 foreign landscape photographers with comfortable colors. We can also learn a lot from their color grading styles!

This is the fully illustrated companion to the video above. Near-identical colors can produce wildly different images through tiny shifts in hue, saturation and luminance. For this edition of photographer recommendations, Thomas brings three foreign landscape photographers with superb palettes: Khumais from Pakistan, black.sail (Chris) from England's Lake District, and Jack Anstey from Scotland. Keyframe screenshots below reveal each one's approach to color.

The first is Khumais from Pakistan, and what mesmerizes most is his command of the monochrome palette.

01 Khumais: The Sophistication of Monochrome

Many of his frames began as ordinary overcast days — shot on auto white balance they would read as plain gray; instead he overlays a cyan-blue in post that both suits the cold mood and looks remarkably soothing. Blue-hour images get unified into a violet-blue, and night scenes into a touch of cyan — each works beautifully (at 0:48 in the video).

Even an ordinary afternoon frame turns striking once unified into a deep warm orange. Monochrome work, of course, demands solid composition and tonal layering: in his mountain scene the foreground falls into blur, the mid-ground snow ridge stays razor sharp, and tones glide from black to bright — beautiful even in black and white, and exquisite with a single hue laid over it. In another night frame, a lone streetlamp supplies the finishing touch (at 1:48 in the video).

He plays with two-color schemes as well: a desert photo is clearly processed by zones — the sand below keeps its golden yellow while the sky above turns a lighter teal, and teal against orange is the classic warm-cool pairing. Another frame uses analogous colors: the yellow-greens below stay subdued, with saturation and attention reserved for the cool background. Overall his saturation is restrained — easy on the eye and rewarding on repeat viewing (at 3:00 in the video).

02 black.sail: High-Saturation Teal and Orange

The second, Chris from the Lake District who shoots as black.sail, works in yet another style. You would never guess his frames came from dreary overcast days — in post he essentially re-colors the image: a cool cast overall (which overcast suits anyway), while through deliberate framing and grading he always preserves some orange-yellow elements. In his rock photo the boulder was originally golden throughout; a constructed selection keeps that section golden while the rest takes on the scene's cool temperature — a brilliant warm-cool contrast (at 4:17 in the video).

His saturation runs high in both blues and oranges, yet the pairing is deliberate: blues sit darker and slightly muted, oranges brighter and more saturated. Beyond warm-cool, luminance and saturation are paired too, which makes the image hum. The photo of golden grass leaping out of a blue background relies on selections — Selective Color, Color Range and friends — to grade zones separately, since a global blue white balance would drag the grass blue as well (at 6:17 in the video).

He even plans color at the shooting stage: in his mountaineering series, tents and sunlit boulders are planted to manufacture gold against the teal sky, and sometimes a small patch of clothing color alone completes a complementary accent. Grand alpine climbing frames plus this grading — genuinely god-tier color work (at 7:32 in the video).

03 Jack Anstey: Painterly, Low-Saturation Palettes

The last is Jack Anstey (featured in an earlier recommendation, now working from Scotland). He also uses teal-orange — the clean, comfortable pairing foreign photographers adore, and the backbone of many film emulation looks — but in a completely different way: overall saturation sits very low, a striking contrast with black.sail's vividness, and the result is just as harmonious (at 8:39 in the video).

In rainy, misty weather he cools the background, then widens the warm-cool gap with elements that are naturally warm — animal fur, dried grass, the glow of headlights, a figure's clothing — making the grade half done in advance. His compositions offer lessons for landscape shooters too: strong first-person immersion and a real sense of story. His most classic frames all reserve a small island of warmth or gold against sweeping teal (at 9:36 in the video).

His sense of degree is exquisite: in one frame the teal sky is rendered very pale and bright — once the sky is light, it sets up superb tonal layers against the darker ground, and the low-saturation teal lets the rich orange below shine without competition. Had the sky been equally dark and saturated, the two would blur into a single mass. That restraint gives his images a painterly quality, rich in geometric composition and classical color pairing (at 10:36 in the video).

1. A monochrome look is never a one-click overlay: composition and tonal layering must first pass the black-and-white test — only then does a single hue elevate the image; 2. In every teal-orange pairing, the ratio of luminance and saturation defines the style — black.sail pairs deep, saturated blues with bright oranges, Jack Anstey inverts the formula; 3. Warm-cool contrast can be manufactured: zoned selections, color planted at the shooting stage, even a small accent of clothing counts; 4. If the sky is meant to be bright, take it all the way — differences in luminance and saturation are the invisible hands that rank a picture's elements.
