One article of substance every week, making photography easy to learn
Landscape photography doesn't only produce masterpieces when the sky is full of red clouds. On rainy days, hazy days, cloudless days, and so on — if you can accurately grasp the photo's atmosphere, you can still shoot wonderful works.
Today Thomas will share 3 landscape photographers active on the photo platform Instagram. They have different styles and excel at expressing photo emotions under other weather conditions — worth following!
Christophe Jacrot is a French man in his 50s, extremely skilled at shooting works in rain and snow. As a former film director, his photography has a unique perspective and a very strong sense of immersion.
Speaking of how he started shooting rain specifically, there's an interesting story. Christophe once received a commercial assignment to shoot a set of sunny tourist promotional images for Paris, France. Unexpectedly, the weather during the shoot was so bad that he had to submit a portfolio full of rain and fog — and unexpectedly, this also brought inspiration to his future photography path.
The bad weather let him discover the different beauty of rainy days, and also reminded him of the works of masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliott Erwitt.
From then on, he focused his gaze on weather everyone considers bad, specifically shooting environmental works under rain.
Later he expanded his portfolio to fog and snow days, equally distinctive.
His works give people a strong sense of being there, as if readers are walking on a street with biting cold wind, or sitting in a car in pouring rain, witnessing the scene at that moment.
Ben Thomas is an Australian photographer and visual artist. His works are highly recognizable, with a surreal, intense "candy color palette."
His works are mainly shot in broad daylight, and quite a few are shot at noon.
His choice of sky also leans toward cloudless clear days or days with few clouds, to create large areas of unified color blocks.
Ben is one of the 2018 Hasselblad Masters winners, and also plans to visit Shanghai in a few weeks for new creations.
Rohan Reilly is a photographer from Ireland. His personal style is deeply influenced by British black-and-white master Michael Kenna and renowned Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.
His works lean toward minimalism, greatly simplifying the frame to basic textures, patterns, and lines.
Besides post-processing methods, the choices made in shooting are also extremely important for building the atmosphere of his works.
He prefers shooting on overcast, rainy, and foggy days. Under these weather conditions, the clean sky and hazy atmosphere let him focus more on shaping tones and textures.
His works are clean and tidy yet full of emotion, embodying a beauty of simplicity.
